Hexagram 43 · Breakthrough (Guài)

The judgment

Make the matter clear in public, and give your warning sincerely and loudly. Start with yourself, and don't take up arms.

The Image: The lake rises up to heaven: breakthrough. So the noble person shares their bounty with those below, and is wary of resting on their own virtue.

From the ancient texts

Shao Yong

Removing and casting out — you must be firm and decisive. Good at first, bad in the end; be careful and keep your dignity.

Jiao’s Forest of Changes

Supported by Yao and aided by Yu, with Chisong, Wangqiao and Pengzu; heading west to visit the Queen Mother, the road is smooth and easy.

With the sage kings Yao and Yu at your side and immortals for company, the road west to the Queen Mother is smooth all the way.

Takashima

  • On fortune: your luck is strong right now; wealth should be spread around, not hoarded — hoarding it brings trouble.
  • On trade: profits are fairly rich, and they should be shared fairly. If you are stingy and give nothing, you will stir up resentment.

The health notes are traditional observations to reflect on. If you feel unwell, follow your doctor’s advice.

The six lines
  1. Nine at the beginning: Strength in the advancing toes. Going forward without being able to win is a mistake.
  2. Nine in the second place: Alarm and shouting; armed men at night. Do not worry.
  3. Nine in the third place: Strength in the cheekbones brings misfortune. The noble person is resolute; walking alone, he meets the rain and gets soaked, and people are annoyed. No blame.
  4. Nine in the fourth place: No skin on his thighs; he walks with difficulty. If he let himself be led like a sheep, regret would vanish — but he hears these words and does not believe them.
  5. Nine in the fifth place: Weeds must be cut away resolutely. Walking the middle way, no blame.
  6. Six at the top: No cry of warning. Misfortune in the end.
